# About Capital AI

A Capital AI account goes through the same path every time: sign up, verify who you are, fund the account, buy compute, deploy it. Some steps happen only in the app; once the account is open, the API can read it, trade for it and deploy for it.

## The steps

| 4. Fund it | App or API | Link a bank and deposit by ACH, or send a wire or USDC, into your Erebor deposit account. [Guide](https://docs.capital.ai/app/deposit.md). Trading uses a separate exchange balance that Capital AI credits once your account is open; see [Transaction flow](https://docs.capital.ai/compute/transaction-flow.md). |
| 5. Buy compute | App or API | Take a provider's listing on [Offtake](https://docs.capital.ai/app/offtake.md), or buy a GPU contract on the [markets](https://docs.capital.ai/app/trade.md). |
| 6. Deploy | App or API | Pair a provider's BASIS contract with the GPU contract for the same month, and ops provisions the machines. [Guide](https://docs.capital.ai/app/compute.md). |
| 7. Trade the rest | App or API | Sell months you don't need; buy more when you do. |

## Two kinds of contract

Every contract is **one GPU for one calendar month (UTC)** and is named `<SYMBOL>-MM-YY`.

| Kind | Example | What it is |
| - | - | - |
| **GPU** | `H100SXM-11-26` | The benchmark for one GPU model in one month, from any provider. These are the liquid books: the market maker quotes them around the clock. |
| **BASIS** | `BBA-11-26` | One provider's machines in one place, in one configuration, for that month. The three-letter code names the provider, location and per-node hardware. You get BASIS contracts by buying a listing on Offtake. |

A **deployment** pairs BASIS contracts with the same number of GPU contracts for the same GPU and month. That pairing is what turns a position into running machines. Details in [Contracts](https://docs.capital.ai/compute/overview.md).

## What the API can and can't do

The API acts for one account, the one its key belongs to. It can't create accounts.
